IPv6 on Quantum Fiber

Quantum Fiber is a residential ISP that providers fiber-to-the-home services via Calix GPON (Florida). They are a part of CenturyLink/Lumen (though, an acquisition of Quantum was recently announced). Their support leaves a bit to be desired, and they did not deploy IPv6 natively with prefix-delegation. Though Quantum does not use Carrier Grade NAT (at least in my area) – it seems that many providers that have not deployed IPv6 yet will lag behind severely, or choose not to unless absolutely forced.

If you have spent any amount of time googling, you’ll find various CenturyLink branded guides that focus on a 6rd tunneling option. In this guide, it seems to rely on PPPoE – and it has worked for some Quantum customers. Unfortunate for me, it did not work exactly as written.

This slight difference worked for me; maybe it will work for you.

Log into your Calix ONT’s RG:

IP: 192.168.0.1 (Default)

Username/Password: Default is found on the label

1. Head to ‘Advanced Setup’

2. Head to ‘WAN Settings’. By default, this was set to Auto Select. Under the ‘Modem Status’ page, it was indicated that this was selected IPoE – so on this dropdown choose IPoE.

3. Under ‘IPv6 connection protocol’, select 6rd. These settings auto-populated for me, but incase they do not – see below & save.

4. At this point, following previous guides I would lose all internet access as PPPoE failed. This is a good stopping point to check the modem status page, and ensure you obtained a v6 prefix. If you are unlucky enough to not have – this may not work for you – there is no reason to continue. If you do:

5. Under ‘LAN Settings’ -> ‘LAN Subnets’ select ‘Edit IPv6 at the bottom as shown.

6. These settings should auto-populate. If Network Address does not, you will need to copy-paste the address from the ‘Modem Status’ page.

At this point, you should be able to refresh your local devices and obtain a lease.
